| The integration of an Anachem Flexus with an Innovadyne Nanodrop gives unrivalled pipetting performance with unique benefits ideal for a range of applications. This combination delivers a dynamic volume range of 50nl to 2ml in addition to the individual features of both units. Not only can both instruments be used in one method, but they can still be used as stand-alone units giving yet more flexibility. |

| The Nanodrop is a low volume, non-contact, valve-free fluid pathway for delivering a robust and low-maintenance means of achieving assay volume reduction without compromising precision or accuracy. |
| The Nanodrop is unique, with its combination of classical syringes and patented microsolenoid valves, which are isolated from the sample, eliminating cross-contamination concerns. The Nanodrop can be configured with 8 or 16 pipetting tips and a single or double plate stage. Two separate fluid pathways allow samples to be both aspirated and dispensed. One pathway serves to aspirate samples or reagents using a classical syringe of either 500 or 1000µl. Each syringe is capable of accurately controlling the flow rate, which can be specified for individual reagents. Air gaps between the system fluid and the sample or reagent minimises dilution effects, whilst providing accurate and precise pipetting. Each tip is precisely engineered and contains a sapphire insert which guarantees a clean and consistent aperture. |
 |
| |
|
| The second pathway is a pressurised fluid filled path with a microsolenoid valve for each individual tip. This path is used for dispensing only. The correct volume of sample or reagent is ejected from the tip based on the length of time the solenoid is open. The pressurised system fluid pushes the sample or reagent out of the tip and onto the target. The pressure level of the system fluid can be adjusted to accommodate different liquids. |
|
| |
| Each individual tip has its own fluid pathway and microsolenoid valve, allowing each tip to deliver a different volume. In addition, with the extended Y stage, 4 tips can reach any sample in any position of an SBS footprint plate, enabling complex method development and design. |

| The Nanodrop technology is perfect for a wide range of applications. Most important to the pharmaceutical industry is assay miniaturisation, which can save hundreds of thousands of dollars per year on a single assay. Miniaturisation is important not only for cost saving, but also finds a niche in uHTS in 1536 well plates, PCR setup, MALDI target preparation, bead and cell-based assays. |
| |
| Prevention of cross contamination is a major concern for laboratories utilizing automated liquid handling for PCR set-up. Traditionally this application demands the use of disposable tips. However, instruments such as the Nanodrop use only washable probes, but good washing techniques have been devised to eliminate cross-contamination. |
| |
| Miniaturisation can also save precious samples, such as those used in protein crystallography. This application benefits from a combination of traditional automated liquid handling on the Flexus for pipetting of well solutions, and nano technology for the pipetting of precious protein samples. |

Flexus with an Integrated Nanodrop – The No Compromise Solution
|
| The integration of a Flexus with a Nanodrop gives unrivalled pipetting performance with unique benefits ideal for a range of applications. This combination delivers a dynamic volume range of 50nl to 2ml in addition to the individual features of both units. Not only can both instruments be used in one method, but they can still be used as stand-alone units giving yet more flexibility. |
| |
 |
Any of the Nanodrop units are suitable for integration and model simply depends on the users requirements. The Nanodrop pipetting stage is positioned underneath an X-rail overhang from the Flexus, and both are controlled via a single software interface. The Flexus plate gripper facilitates plate movement on and off the Nanodrop as required in the method. The Nanodrop syringe unit is positioned to the side or can be placed underneath the units. |
| |
|
| As was described above, protein crystallography applications are ideally suited for this type of instrument combination. The cost of producing purified protein for high throughput crystallisation screening is expensive, so the use of robots that can dispense it with minimal waste and without denaturation is crucial. The Flexus is ideal for well solution distribution and the Nanodrop ideal for setting up the protein drops while conserving this precious sample. |

 |
Other applications which benefit from this integrated arrangement include RT-PCR and MALDI target preparation. A Flexus with a vacuum station is able to perform extractions or clean up procedures prior to PCR setups in 384 or 1536 well plates or MALDI target spotting by the Nanodrop. Flexus’ bar code readers can also track samples throughout the procedure. |
| The combination of Flexus and the Nanodrop is unrivalled in the market and delivers an uncompromised solution to many complex applications. The flexibility achieved by running both units together or individually surpasses all automation expectations, but with pipetting accuracy and precision second to none. |
